Mike Nathal worked as a metallurgist for NASA for 32 years before retiring in 2013. As an engineer, he was involved in projects ranging from the development of new materials to improve jet and rocket engines, to enhancing the reliability of robotic deep space probes so that they could continue to operate for 20 years or more.
He started teaching himself woodcarving in 2008 and turning in 2011. He joined North Coast Woodturners in 2012 and has been in the shop ever since. He enjoys a wide variety of turning projects but hollow forms and spheres are his favorites.
