MAY TURNERS ANONYMOUS MEETING!
This coming Saturday, May 18th is the final meeting for the season, and the final meeting at Contemporary Craft.
As usual, doors open at 9am with the program starting about 9:45. For you visiting us for the first time, we meet in the basement of the Contemporary Craft Building, 2100 Smallman Street, Pittsburgh.
After this month’s meeting, we embark on a new adventure! Several times in the past history of TA, the club has had to move to a new location. Well, due to Contemporary Craft losing its lease we are in that situation again. We have had a great relationship with CC for many years – I never went to a TA meeting anywhere else.
Last July a search committee was formed to find a new place to hold our meetings. This included the current board members plus a few leaders from the past. I would like to thank all who helped out with the search: Annie Henson, Becky Maruca, Bill Hayes, Dennis Kearney, Glen Nickodemus, Maurice Brazeau, Pat Griffin, Paul Yesko, Rick Barbour, Dave Berringer, David Dudney, C W Kreimer, John Schlueter, and Craig Smith.
The decision was not an easy one. We first formed a list of the “perfect space” and realized we had to compromise from there. The search narrowed down to two locations and a vote was held with Woodcraft coming out on top.
Starting with the September 21st meeting, we will be meeting at the Woodcraft store, 102 Four Coins Drive, Canonsburg, PA. If you happen to visit the store before then, be sure to thank the manager, Kyle Neiman for allowing us to use the store for the meetings. While I realize some of you have a longer drive to reach there, maybe saving $ 10 on parking will help ease the burden.
Remember those cute little mice in the ornament and box exchange last year? This month Becky will show you how easy it is to make them. This is a good time to learn a new trick to multiply your turnings.
So, we need a little help this month. I know you women are great at multi-tasking, but it is a bit too much to ask Becky to do the raffle and also demonstrate. A few of you have done this before, or it could be a new experience for one of you to run the raffle this month. Becky already has things organized, all you have to do is sell tickets. In short, no help – no raffle.
This month’s prizes include:
$ 50 Robust Gift Certificate
$ 20 Craft Supplies Gift Certificate
$ 20 Craft Supplies Gift Certificate
Blue Tool Roll
Center Finder Set
Deluxe Chatter Tool
Green Maple Bowl Blank
And of course – THE MYSTERY BOX !
HELP WANTED FOR THE RAFFLE
As is apparent this month, we need backup for all the positions. Becky is looking for an apprentice to learn how to run the Raffle. This is a great opportunity to meet all the other members and help the club at the same time. If you do the math, it becomes apparent that the monthly dues does not cover all the club expenses – The raffle does the rest. We like to rotate jobs in the club every couple of years so no one gets burned out – here is your chance! Please talk to me or Becky.
BASEBALL BAT RAFFLE
Last change to put your name into the Baseball Bat Raffle. We will draw the WINNING NAME at the end of the May Meeting. RULES FOR ENTRY ARE: You don’t need to be present to Win. There is no charge to enter. A paid member can write his/her name on a slip of paper (which will be provided) and put ONE slip in the White Box per meeting. So you have only 1 chance left to put your name in the drawing.
Here is a great chance to help the club. With the passing of Bill Hayes, we have an opportunity for a lucky person to handle the club finances. This is not as hard as it seems. We write only a few checks and make one bank deposit each month so keeping things in line is not that hard. Please see me if you have any interest and I will explain things to you.
The shirts are in!!! See Becky to pick-up your shirt/s at the May 18th meeting.
Summer is almost here, and Becky will not have another shirt order until the September 21st TA meeting. If anyone would like to place an order before then, you can contact Tees-N-Tops yourself.
NEW DVD’s IN THE TA LIBARAY:
We acquired Ted Sokolowski’s other 3 DVDs:

- Making a Peppermill
- Mixing & Matching Color for Woodworkers
They will be available soon to the membership.
COMING IN MAY:
May 18th after the meeting – Anyone who can spare a few hours! I would like to organize for the move and take the travel stuff with me. Many hands make light work!
AAW SYMPOSIUM – RALEIGH N.C.
TURNERS ANONYMOUS PICNIC
Save the date — August 24th. This will be our first picnic in 5 years. It will be at Evergreen Community Park, 3430 Evergreen Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15237 (Ross Township). The time is 11am – 7pm. We are looking for 2 crews one to setup & one to tear-down. Setup time will begin at 10:30am. The club will provide the drinks, (no alcohol is allowed on the grounds) and the burgers and dogs for the grill. If you plan to come, please bring a side dish or dessert. There will be a sign-up sheet for the Picnic at the meeting so we can plan the food and drinks.
We will try to have some turning fun at the Picnic. The travel lathe will be there, if there is enough interested, and we’ll have a short TA meeting about upcoming events, and demos at our new meeting location — Woodcraft.
SEPTEMBER IS THE NEW SEASON:
September 21st Club Meeting. Yes, you have to watch that same old show-off again. Dave Betler will have a brand new demonstration on how to turn a genie lamp on the lathe. This is something that I said was impossible 5 years ago, so this will be like going to a NASCAR race – you wait for the CRASH! This demo will repeat at the OVWG in October
ROSS COMMUNITY DAY – We have been invited to do a demo at Ross Township’s Community Day at The Block at Northway. An inside venue, early September, details to follow.
FAIR IN THE PARK – September 6th, 7th, & 8th. We participate in this every year doing demo’s and passing information out to the public. Help is needed so a few people don’t have to do the whole three days.
COMING IN OCTOBER:
October 19th Club Meeting – She ain’t afraid of that skew! Linda Van Gehuchten will show you the simple things to do to make this one of your favorite spindle turning tools (OR USE IS AS A NEGATIVE RAKE SCRAPER). Linda has been one of the original club members, TA club president, AAW board member, and remains one of our few professional turners. We are lucky to have such a talented person to share with us.
Mid Atlantic Woodturning Symposium (MAWTS) this year is October 4th thru the 6th. Held in downtown Lancaster, PA this is a nice event and has been a favorite of many of our club members.
Ohio Valley Woodturning Guild (OVWG) is holding their bi-annual symposium October 18th thru 20th. This is a great event that many of our club members attend. One of our members will be a demonstrator this year. Please see their website for information. https://ovwg.clubexpress.com
We had 12 people sign up last month for Ted’s hands on class – I would like to see 12 peppermills even if they are not complete.
This is the last chance to show off at Contemporary Craft, so lets bring in your favorite pieces from past years.
This may be your last chance to make a memory at the Contemporary Craft building! Come to the meeting, visit with friends, learn something new, and help out a little.
See you there,
